I strongly believe massage has a key role in childrens development. The importance of having loving, supportive and trusting relationships early in our lives is fundamental to developing a happy, secure and balanced adult. I often wonder what the world would be like if we all experienced this. To help support the awareness and practice of this right now I would encourage all parents to learn baby massage. Most health centres offer this training free for a few weeks. There are also private therapists that offer individual sessions or group classes.
There are lots of quality studies and information on the benefits of baby massage. Here is a basic summary.
Baby Massage has benefits for both parents and babies.
Benefits for Baby:
- Bonding with parent
- Relief from colic, pain and discomfort
- Reducing restlessness and promoting good sleep
- Supporting and strengthening primary systems
Benefits for Parents:
- Bonding with baby for both mother and father
- Supports communication between parents and babies
- Increases confidence
- Provides group support
- Can promote relaxation and sense of well being for everyone!
Even a few minutes of massage after a bath, or any other time that fits in with you and your childs routine is all it takes.
I trained with the Scottish School of Baby Massage in 2007 and are qualified to teach individuals and groups.
I would highly recommend this book –Infant Massage – A guide for loving parents by Vimala McClure
